The Penny Sofa By Sean Symington

Designed in collaboration with interior designer Sean Symington, the Penny sofa blends classic English upholstery with signature valance detailing. Rooted in traditional proportions, the silhouette features a fixed back, tailored arms, and a distinctive hand cut scalloped skirt along the base. The design offers a fresh, playful take on timeless British seating, making it an elegant focal point for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Every frame is bench built to order in Derbyshire using sustainably sourced European beech and birch hardwood, constructed with traditional glued, screwed, and doweled joinery. The internal suspension features serpentine springs across the seat and back, finished with a natural wool interliner. Master upholsterers shape each frame and hand cut every individual scallop along the skirt, ensuring meticulous attention to detail from the internal structure to the final tailored flourish.

Fabric

• Please note: your Penny Sofa is sold without fabric. You're welcome to supply your own—just email us at hello@thehouseupstairs.co.uk and we’ll share our address.
• Or, if you’d like a little help from our design team, we offer a free fabric sourcing service for your sofa. We’ll send you unlimited suggestions, plus swatches delivered straight to your door to help you find the perfect match.
• You’ll need 15 metres of fabric for our standard sized Penny. To estimate fabric cost, simply multiply the required meterage by the fabric’s retail price per metre.

• Standard size: 200cm (l) x 96cm (d) x 85cm (h) requires 17 metres of fabric

Your Penny Sofa will be ready to ship in approximately 10 weeks. Shipping times may vary depending on your location. Please note, for custom sizes or if you're providing your own fabric, the lead time begins once we’ve received the fabric.
